C988 Flat Vase    13½"      39#         69.90

Pattern # 11 is Blue Jay and Hawthorn     2.00

Wild Rose and Blackberries

Clean the greenware.  This is a rather fragile type piece so I would suggest firing to a cone 018 to give added strength to the greenware.

Sponge on three smooth coats of the T124 Blue Horizon Textural glaze.  Dry the piece overnight and fire to cone 05 as Appli-Kate will not adhere to the unfired textural glaze.

Glaze inside of vase by thinning the Pink Gloss glaze with a  small amount of water, pour inside, roll vase to cover, then pour out the excess. Completely remove any drips on the outside with a damp sponge. Trace on pattern using Mylar Carbon.

Appli-Kate will be solid in the jar and occasionally may even be dry. This will not affect the glaze. Cut and stir with the tool, add a few drops of water and stir completely. Product will be smooth and drip slowly off the tool when proper consistency is reached.

When applying the Appli-Kate, all elements of the design that are underneath are completed first. in this case, the tree limb is applied first. Use the #2 square shader like a scoop, picking up larger or smaller portions of the Appli-Kate, depending on th size of the area to be covered. Drop glaze from brush and immediately push or pull towafrd edge of limb, shaping the gnarled tree bark before the product dries. Never brush the Appli-Kate, but pat to smooth out.
Next, we will fill in the leaves using the Apple Green and the small Appli-Kate brush. When doing leaves or flower petals, apply a leaf and let dry before doing an adjoining leaf. If wet is applied next to wet, some of the separation will be lost. Skip to another flower or group of leaves while the first is drying. Shape turnbacks and center veins as you go. If you are not happy with an element, simply scrape it off and re-apply.

Refer to the enlarged section of the pattern for color placement of the bird. Using the Appli-Kate brush like a scoop, pick up small portions of the White and apply to all areas marked #1 on the pattern. Stir you build-up glaze often as you are working.

Apply the flowers last, using your pattern as a guide for color placement. You will notice that some blossoms are White and others are Pink. This is a characteristic of the Hawthorn Blossom. The centers are applied last using the Yellow.

When all parts of the design have been filled in, you will be ready to shade your design with the Single-Stroke translucent underglazes. Mix each color as needed on a tile with enough Antique Medium to bring to a brushing consistency. Use the #6 Square Shader and Foliage Green to shade all leaves following shading instructions on pattern. Add veins using a fine liner brush and the same green. Shade the white blossoms with the Pink and the pink blossoms with the Apple Red Single-Stroke. The centers are shaded with Burnt Orange with a touch of Red Brown on one side. Use the Foliage Green to make a small "y" in the middle and add some dots around center using the Red Brown. Shade branches with Cobalt Black, and add some thorns with Red Brown. Shade the bird in areas marked and add fine lines to separate the feathers. Shade white with a touch of the Cobalt Black. Fire completed piece to cone 05.
