The large Crest Urn and Plate above were finished by Evelyn Gildner Clean greenware carefully. Because of the extra large size of this urn and plate, we recommend that you fire both pieces to cone 018 before you apply the Satellite Textural Glaze. This will prevent breakage as you are sponging on the glaze. Sponge on 3 or 4 even coats of T126 Nightshade. Allow each coat to dry before applying successive coats. Sketch or trace on your design. White Design, a stand-up type glaze, was used for the design work on the piece pictured. This glaze will be tinted with Single-Stroke translucent underglazes. Thin the White Design with water to a creamy consistency and place a generous amount on a palette. Add a small amount of Apple Red translucent to the glaze to make a pink color. This will fire somewhat darker than the color you see on the palette. Apply this mixture to the pink areas shown on the photo. Apply 2 coats to each design element by allowing the glaze to roll off a small round brush. When dry apply a third coat to the turnback areas on some leaves and petals. Add enough more Apple red translucent to the pink mixture to make a rose color. Apply as before to rose areas in photograph. When finished with the pink and rose, clean palette and put out another generous amount of the Design and tint this to a light green by using Lettuce Green translucent. Apply this mixture as before to all green areas shown in photo. Follow same procedure using Purple translucent to tint to an orchid color, Marigold Yellow to tint the yellow color and Peacock Blue for the blue areas. When all design areas are filled in with glaze, shade each area with the translucent color that was used for tinting. Use a small liner brush and Cobalt Black to detail flowers, leaves and butterflies with thin lines of black. Fill in stems and the scallop design on the top of urn with the black translucent. Fire to Cone 05-06. Glaze inside of urn with a glaze of your choice, taking care to completely remove any drips on the outside with a clean damp sponge. Fire again to the maturing cone of the glaze you selected. Appli-Kate may be used in place of the Design Build-Up Glaze if desired. If you plan to use these colors, fire the glazed urn to cone 05 before glazing the inside or applying the Appli-Kate as Appli-Kate will not stick over the top of an unfired Textural Glaze. Appli-Kate is available in 18 colors so it will not be necessary to tint each color, just select the colors that correspond to the photograph and apply according to the instruction sheet. These colors will also be shaded with a darker translucent when all design areas are completed. Add detail and scallop design with Cobalt Black translucent. Fire to cone 05 when completed.
